It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

… or in our case, it’s beginning to look a little bit like Christmas.

It’s kind of interesting staying here in Grenada for the holidays. It really doesn’t feel like Christmas at all. For one, it’s between 90 and 100 degrees each day. Then, there really isn’t that mass consumerism push here. I don’t have a tv so I’m not subjected to countless commercials about gifts and sales. It’s actually been a bit nice to get away from it all.

I just did a little bit of decorating. It’s nothing compared to the decorating I did last year. But, it’s our own tiny version of Christmas.

First, I’ve decided to make a gallery wall. I’m just tired of the bland tan walls. These walls are concrete and nothing really sticks to them except electrical tape and of course, hot glue. 😉 So, I found this roll of Caribbean blue contact paper and I put a stripe on the wall as if it were a glossy paint sample.

I’m going to change it out with pictures and artwork, but for now it just holds a string of ornaments.

I also put a few ornaments near our table and bought a tiny Christmas tree.

It’s not much, but it will do.

Here’s a look at last year’s tree:
If you can believe it, our electricity bill here in Grenada for a 270 square foot apartment is actually more than it was in our 1400 square foot Richmond, VA town home. In Richmond, I paid around $140 per month in electricity, sometimes less. Here, I am consistently at $175, and that’s only running AC in one room at night and fans otherwise. Needless to say, we’re not hanging any lights in the apartment this year.
So, as you can see, Grenada does present some challenges when it comes to the holidays and every day in general. But, we’re making the best of it and trying to enjoy one of the only stress-free, commercial-free, commercialized-mall free Christmases that we’ll ever have.
Have you started decorating for the holidays yet?

  1. First of all– next door to me it’s beginning to look a LOT like Christmas. Check out my latest blogpost.

Secondly, I love your decorating! So pretty!

Thirdly, all I have this year as far as decorations go is a Charlie Brown Christmas tree :(. But when I go home for actual Christmas there will be a big tree and real decorations!

  2. I like that idea of the contact paper and interchanging different decorations! You’re so creative 🙂
I love the Christmas decorations you have going on… and I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas there on the island!!! xo
