5 Rules for My When My Twins Get Their First Car

The hubs and I keep talking about what we’re going to do in terms of raising these kiddos. The topics have ranged from how we’re going to take turns getting up at night all the way to what type of college we want to send them to.

One of our last conversations centered around if teenagers should have cars or not. I had access to a car as a teenager but it wasn’t “mine” until I went to college. Hubs got his own car at 17. So, we’ll probably give them a car to share in high school, but it will definitely come with some rules:

1. MAKE THEM TAKE EXCELLENT CARE OF IT

My car would not be 12 years old if I didn’t take care of it and if my parents didn’t take care of it before they gave it to me. Regular oil changes, fixing things when they break, and in general keeping it clean and purty have all made it run, run, run. The kids have to learn about basic upkeep if they want to drive it. Simple as that.

2. DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE IT AWAY

Cars are a luxury, not a right. If they don’t do what they’re supposed to do, they don’t get the keys. Sure it’s more of a pain for us because we’ll have to drive them around, but it’ll hopefully make the twins a bit more aware of following the rules.

3. GET COVERED

Insurance is important when teenagers drive. I’m sure the costs will be so expensive once we get there! All in good time, of course. I mean, the kids aren’t even born yet lol.

4. MAKE THEM SHARE

There’s no reason that each twin needs their own car. They shared the womb, so they can share their vehicle. If they do well, we can talk about getting them their own cars when they go to college.

5. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TICKETS

If they get a ticket, we won’t bail them out. That’s their job if they find themselves in a pickle. They can also help pay for their own insurance if their bad driving causes a hike in the rate.

I guess I sound kind of strict with the above rules and who knows what will change over the next 16 or 17 years. It sure is fun to think about the two of them sharing a car, though. I think we have a lot of fun coming our way!

Did you get your teenage their own car? What are the rules?

  1. Our twin boys are taking their drivers license test next month and we’re pretty nervous lol. We bought the car and they’re both on the A honor roll so we’re covering the insurance too as long as there’s no hikes due ticket or accidents, they will cover those including the ticket cost. The reason I came across this is because ours will share the car and wanted to see how some figured out how to share gas?
